Kathmandu, Nepal - October 8, 2023 - In a celebration of Sherpa culture, the second convention of the World Sherpa Association (WSA) commenced today in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, Nepal. The event coincides with World Sherpa Day, observed annually on October 8. The convention aims to unite Sherpas from across the globe, promote their language and traditions, and unveil an innovative language learning app known as "Sherpa World."
Under the leadership of President Ang Dorjee Sherpa Lama, commonly known as A.D, the World Sherpa Association has been at the forefront of preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Sherpa community. In 2017, the organization was founded with the mission of fostering unity among Sherpas worldwide.
Today, Sherpas from diverse nations gather to mark Global Sherpa Day, an annual celebration that unites Sherpas in language, culture, and tradition. The convention is not only a platform for cultural exchange but also serves as an opportunity to address contemporary challenges facing the Sherpa community.
The highlight of this year's convention is the launch of the "Sherpa World" app, a groundbreaking language learning tool that offers translations in Sherpa, Sambhota, Nepali, and English. This app will enable users to learn the Sherpa language, pronunciation styles, and gain insights into Sherpa customs such as weddings and births.
Geljen Sherpa Lama, Chairman of the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of the "Sherpa World" app, stating that it's not only a valuable resource for Sherpas but also for researchers interested in studying the Sherpa language and culture.
In addition to the convention's cultural exchange and app launch, participants will embark on an excursion to Sherpa villages in Sindhupalchok District on October 9. The convention will conclude with a heartwarming farewell program on October 11 at the Nepal Sherpa Association building in Kathmandu.
Representatives from Sherpa communities in 21 countries, along with various Nepali organizations, are expected to be present during the convention. They will partake in discussions about the Sherpa community's past, present, and future, and will have the opportunity to participate in the unique election process for the association's leadership positions.
The convention highlights the importance of preserving and promoting the Sherpa language, culture, and traditions, ensuring that the vibrant heritage of this community continues to thrive for generations to come.
As the convention unfolds, it not only celebrates Sherpa heritage but also serves as a testament to the unity and determination of Sherpas worldwide in preserving their unique culture and traditions.
